Melody Webb (b.1946) was a Park Service veteran and is a distinguished historian.

A Woman in the Great Outdoors recounts her 21 years in the National Park Service and many efforts to preserve our country's resources despite political controversies and efforts by special interests (among them, mining and lumber interests, hunters, snowmobilers, bicyclists, RV owners, film producers and concessioners) to take over, exploit--and ofttimes despoil--our splendid natural heritage.

Webb is married to Robert M. Utley (b. 1920), former chief historian for the National Park Service and the author of numerous award-winning biographies of Custer, Sitting Bull, and Billy the Kid.
