Harold Jantz (1907 - 1987) was Prof. of German at Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, and Duke Universities. He was greatly esteemed as one of the foremost Germanists of his generation, in part because of his publications on German Renaissance and Baroque literature and his Goethe-studies.

His first major Goethe- book, Goethe's Faust as a Renaissance Man: Parallels and Prototypes, in 1951, presents a new reading based on the drama's Graeco-Roman and Renaissance backgrounds.

Solid, clean copy of this thorough scholarly study. Very light uniform age-toning and occasional light foxing to paper, which retains excellent flexibility. Moderate wear and light fraying to edges of the unclippeed dust jacket. No previous ownership markings.
