Matthiessen makes a detailed examination of the American Indian Movement and the bloody confrontation with the FBI near Wounded Knee in 1975. This fight resulted in the death of one Indian and two agents. As a result, it led to the jailing of native American activist Leonard Peltier.
The author also provides a detailed overview of the years of struggle between the Lakota Indians and the US government. In addition, he discusses traditional Indian beliefs about the sanctity of the Earth.
The author further explores how mining violations of Indian land might have influenced events. Finally, Mattheiesen presents new evidence supporting Peltier"s claims of innocence and argues for a new trial.
