Thomas Low Nichols (1815–1901) was a physician, journalist, writer and advocate for a number of causes including universal suffrage, libertarianism, free love, hydrotherapy, food and health reform, vegetarianism and spiritualism.

A few years after this quasi-anthropological overview of Woman's behavior, the good--though eccentric doctor--wrote Esoteric Anthropology: The Mysteries of Man (1854), which discused the physiology (pathological, therapeutical, and obstetrical) of men and women.
