Andrew William Mellon (1855 – 1937), sometimes A.W., was an American banker, businessman, industrialist, philanthropist, art collector, and politician of the "Gilded Age" and "Progressive Era." From the wealthy Mellon family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he established a business empire before he became the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932, under Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. He thus presided over the Roaring Twenties and Great Crash of 1929. A conservative Republican, Mellon favored laissez faire policies that reduced taxation and the national debt after World War I.
