Tarzana, California: Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Publisher, [1967]. Jeff Jones. First Edition. Cloth. Small 8vo, burgundy cloth with gold stamping, frontispiece, front panel, and pictorial dust jacket (unclipped & mylar protected) by Jeff Jones, 287 pages. Fine / Fine. Item #295

Exceptionally fine copy of this well researched, lurid historical novel set in Imperial Rome. It offers the memoirs of a captive named "Britannicus" who becomes the slave and 25-year long companion of the sadistic and crazed Emperor Caligula.

Completed during Edgar Rice Burrough's residence on Honolulu in 1941 just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, it was published in this form 17 years after the author's death.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is best known for his creation of Tarzan of the Jungle as well as John Carter, the Mars adventurer. In literary step with authors like Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, and Rider Haggard, Burroughs elevated the pulps where he began into dynamic genres, among them adventure novels, lost worlds, Westerns, science fictions, and planetary romances.

Exceptional condition for these early editions that have wonderful jackets, appeared during or shortly after World War on inferior paper, and were often read-to-pieces!

Press run limited to 2000 copies. Zeuschner 186.

Price: $145.00
