LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER
Paris: Odyssey, 1935. First Authorized Edition: Seventh Printing. Limp leather. 12mo, pebbled leather wrappers with ribbon place marker, "An Open Letter to the Public of D.H. Lawrence from Frieda Lawrence," xxx-pages. Good +. Item #257
Mrs. Lawrence wrote in her "Open Letter" that her husband had written three separate versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover, but that this was the first to be unexpurgated, carefully revised, and low priced in accordance with the author's wishes.
The date of Frieda Lawrence's "Open Letter" is January 26, 1933. Also in 1933, Tauchnitz published a pirated European, supposedly "unexpurgated" edition of the infamous underground bestseller.
Most of these unexpurgated copies were read to pieces or lost during the war. Somewhat rubbed with abraision to the spine caps, this is the seventh printing of this--then--scandalous novel.
