Pair of Silhouettes: Gentleman & boy Signed "C. Herve Pinxit"

London: by the artist. C. Herve. original. Cardboard. Pair of painted miniature portrait bust silhouettes on a gray background, (unframed: 3" x 4.5"), one SIGNED "C. Herve Pinxit," while the other is clearly by the same artist. Fine. Item #2000

This offering is painted on a card that measures 3 x 4.5 inches. They are both images that have been carefully modeled with superb detailing of the subjects' hair. The reverse of each portrait has ... The portly man wears a spectacle, which is unusual, and even his wispy hair is deftly portrayed. This pair shows no signs of having ever been framed.

Most of Charles Herve's creation of bust-length silhouettes were cut-outs in plain black, which often were outlined, at least, by using a projection machine that he had invented (or adapted) which he called "The Automaton Artist." A number of such studies were on display at "The Prosopographus Gallery," he operated in London.

Artwork by Herve was exhibited at the Royal Academy. See also "A half-length painted on a rectangualr piece of card, signed "C. Herve" and house in a fitted case. Rooms of Sotheby, London, 14 July, 1969.
