THE GREAT ICE AGE; and Its Relation to / The Antiquity of Man

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1877. Early American Edition (perhaps 2nd printing of 1st American edition by D. Appleton in 1874). Decorated & gilt-stamped cloth. 8vo (8" x 5 1/2"), brown decorative blind-stamped & -gilt cloth (ice-berg design), numerous maps and engraved B&W illustrations, folding map at end, pouch with large map of Scotland at rear, xxv,[i] + [1], 2-545 pages + [4] Ads. Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz. Very Good + / None. Item #161

SCARCE and IMPORTANT early scientific study of glaciation and, therefore, an important baseline for climate change. Fine binding and attractive, bright, significant illustrations and maps: one is very large foldout map of Scotland. The author also studies important aspects of man's distribution and evolution.

Remarkably tight copy in superior condition for its age. Minor rubbing to extremities of binding. A couple of small (1" or less) splits along folds of two maps; pouch for folding map at rear has a tear (the pouch is very tight but the rare map is in excellent shape).

James Giekie (1839 - 1915) was the brother of Sir Archibald Giekie, who was active in the geological survey of Scotland and became Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University.

EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN & BRIGHT COPY! Tight, fresh plates; folding maps with a few minor nicks.

The first American edition was by D. Appleton in 1874; a second edition was published in 1877 by Edw. Stanford in Britain but its collation had 624 pp. and thus appears to be different from ours. Nor does our copy appear to indicate it is a "Second Edition." A third edition was published by Edward Stanford in 1894.
