George W. Eveleth was the second of eight children, and the oldest son. Born in Maine, whence came his enthusiastic correspondence with Poe. He attended Bowdoin Medical College in 1849, and may have worked briefly as a physician in Phillips, ME 1855-1857. He was married to Rosannah Davies. Eveleth later corresponded with George Edward Woodberry in 1883-1885, as Woodberry was preparing his biography of Poe.
