Peter Matthiessen (1927 – 2014) was an American novelist, naturalist, wilderness writer, zen teacher, and environmental activist. A co-founder of The Paris Review, he won the National Book Award in fiction for Shadow Country in 2008; and the National Book Award for Nonfiction for The Snow Leopard in 1979.
