John Walter Lord Jr. (1917 – 2002) was an American author, lawyer, copywriter and popular historian of 12 works best known for his 1955 account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, A Night to Remember. Lord's early influence was highly valued by David McCullough.

Walter Lord tells in "Lonely Vigil" what had been the untold story of the coastwatchers of the Solomon Islands. Much of the book is compiled from interviews with about 100 participants. They were missionaries (one being a woman), planters, locals who had been living in the Solomons but remained even after the Japanese invaded. Their efforts led to ciritical intelligence affecting the success of the Americans on Guadalcanal. Young John F. Kennedy owed his rescue to coastwatchers.
