Robert Duane Ballard (born 1942) is an etired Navy officer and a Professor of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. He is most noted for his underwater archaeology: maritime archaeology and archaeology of shipwrecks: among them the discoveries of the RMS Titanic, the battleship Bismarck, and the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.
