Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, OM, FRS, Hon FRSE (1871 – 1937) was a New Zealand physicist --often resident and working in Cambridge, England, as well as at major institutions in Canada and the United States.

He came to be known as the father of nuclear physics. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him to be the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday (1791–1867).

In 1908, Rutherford won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his profound researches and the discovery that radioactivity resulted when one form of matter was transformed into another.
