Henry Mitchell (1924 - 1993) was a Washington Post author who wrote a much loved gardening column, "The Earthman," for 20 years. His engaging and informative pieces were often wry, humorous, and full of uncommon sense. Garden writer Allen Lacy wrote that "Mitchell was the best garden writer in America, but he was more than that. He was a master essayist." Some thought of him as "the Julia Child of gardening."
