Walter Ellis Mosley (born 1952) is an American novelist, most widely valued for his crime fiction. He has written a series of best-selling historical mysteries featuring Easy Rawlins, a black WW-II vet-turned-hard boiled P-I working LA in the late '40s.

Devil in a Blue Dress is the Author's First Novel and First Easy Rawlins Novel. It won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 1991; also the Shamus and CWA Dagger Award; nominated for the Edgar. The classy novel was adapted for the similarly titled 1995 movie starring Denzel Washington.
