David Cornwell (1931 – 2020), aka pen name "John le Carré " was a British author honored for his espionage novels. During the Cold War, he worked for MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). His third novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) was an international best-seller

John Le Carré's spy novel THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL deals with Martin Kurtz, an Israeli spymaster, who plans to kill Khalil - a Palestinian terrorist who is bombing Jewish targets in Europe. It also concerns Charlie, an English actress and double-agent working for the Israelis. William F. Buckley thought the author's treatment transcended the spy novel genre.

The book was adapted as a movie in 1984 starring Diane Keaton, Klaus Kinski, Sami Frey, and directed by George Roy Hill.
