In The Emperor's General, Captain Jay Marsh, who experienced the horror left by retreating Japanese in the Philippiines during the last days of World War Two, becomes General Douglas MacArthur's confidant, translator, and spy. As a consequence, Marsh winds up playing a dangerous game of deceit and brutal injustice in the shadow world of postwar Japan's royal palaces. To his dismay, he realizes that the defeated emperor and his wily aides were exploiting MacArthur's ruthless ambition to become the American Caesar.
