Cloth. 12mo (7 1/4" x 4 7/8"), gray cloth with black labels & gold lettering on spine and ruling on cover, archival polyester-protected pictorial dust jacket (not clipped) with B&W woodcut of a village by Galdone, with a brief Introduction by Thomas Hardy; publisher's gray topstain; gray-patterned Running Torchbearer ML endpapers; vii, [vii] + 503 pages. Fine / Very Good. Item #7463

Thomas Hardy OM (1840 – 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England.

SCARCE title in such a VG dust jacket. Here the cloth and contents are NF-to-Fine with No previous owner's marks. The dust jacket is unclipped, bright, and quite clean, but with a bit of edgewear and a 3/8" chip from the lower portion of the dj's spine.

Overall, this is a VG copy of the handy Modern Library edition often much abused by readers. Toledano's Guide (p.176) places the inside dust jacket number of "408" as about 1962. This is, therefore, an early reprint of the 1951 edition.
