Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) was a German polymath, writer, and statesman. His works include epic and lyric poetry; prose and verse dramas; memoirs; an autobiography; literary and aesthetic criticism; treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour; and four novels.

The first part of Faust appeared in 1808; the first English translation in 1832. Professor Mark Van Doren praised this translation by Alice Raphael (1887-1975) as being "the best in its combination of fidelity and form." Goethe himself praised the illustrations executed by noted French artist Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863).
