Holling Clancy Holling (1900 - 1973) was a brilliantly talented American author-and-illustrator. In addition to his warmly executed naturalistic full-color plates, he and his wife filled the margins of their books with detailed vignettes of entrancing images, objects, and lore to accompany their finely written and remarkably interesting narratives.

Holling is well known for the book Paddle-to-the-Sea, which was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1942. Other distinguished works include his beautifully illustrated and written Seabird (1948) and Minn of the Mississippi (1951), which both won Newbery Honors. Holling wrote and illustrated--often with his brilliantly talented wife Lucille--a score of other highly prized young-people's books.

Lucille Webster Holling (1900 - 1989) was an illustrator, advertising and commercial Artist, fashion designer and set Designer, as well as a teacher . She (and her husband, m.1925) met while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is best known for her collaborations with Holling on The Book of Indians (1935), The Book of Cowboys (1936), Little Buffalo Boy (1939), and Pagoo (1957).
