Alice Walker (born 1944) is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and activist. She wrote the critically acclaimed novel The Color Purple (1982), which won the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Walker also wrote the novels Meridian (1976) and The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970), among other works.

BANNED prints two short stories and an excerpt from The Color Purple that had been removed from testing material used by the Board of Education of California.
