Peter Benchley (1940 – 2006) was an American author, screenwriter, and ocean activist. He was the author of the bestselling novel Jaws and co-author of its film adaptation. Several of his works were also adapted for cinema and television, including The Deep, The Island, Beast, and White Shark.

This adventure novel does not star an actual white shark / fish but deals with a Nazi mechanical "commando" bearing the fish's name that is accidentally released years after the end of World War II,
