Pierre Louÿs (1870 – 1925) was a French poet and writer, well known for lesbian and classical themes. He sought to "express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection."
Long after the author's death, his novel Aphrodite–mœurs antiques [Aphrodite: ancient manners, 1896] was made into a musical entitled: Aphrodite ('Monodramma di costumi antichi') with music and libretto by Giorgio Battistelli; Premiere: 7 Jul 1988; Villa Massimo, Rome.
This UNCOMMON Modern Library edition bears the copyright date of 1933.
Toledano's Guide (pp.165, 176) places the printing of this design for the dust jacket rear panel from 1954-59, while the number "405" printed at the top inside of the dust jacket indicates a printing of 1962.
