Ishmael Beah (born 1980) Ishmael Beah is a Sierra Leonean author and human rights' activist who rose to fame with his acclaimed memoir, A Long Way Gone. Forced as a 13-year old boy to become a soldier during the 1991 civil war that afflicted Sierra Leone, he participated in its murderous drug-powered massacres until rescued in 1996 by a coalition of UNICEF and NGO's.

His novels deal with this violent background and his struggles to overcome guilt and rejoin society. In Radiance of Tomorrow, Beah explores the difficult renewal of a town ravaged by civil war through two friends who return afterwards.

The well reviewed novel has been described as 'written with the moral urgency of a parable and the searing precision of a firsthand account."
