"Henry Bryan Binns [was] an Englishman whose Life of Walt Whitman (1905) is the first complete, factual, and exhaustive biography , , [and] was as tenderly sympathetic with the poet as his most intimate friends had been."--Gay Wilson Allen, Walt Whitman Handbook, p.34.
Walter "Walt" Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. He was a part of the transition between Transcendentalism and Realism. Whitman is often called "the father of free verse." During the Civil War, he worked as a nurse caring for wounded soldiers, and was a passionate supporter of Abraham Lincoln.
