Flora Timms Thompson (1876 - 1947) became the closely observant naturalist of her environment when she wrote her semi-autobiographical trilogy Lark Rise to Candleford. The three volumes were Lark Rise (1939), illustrated by Lynton Lamb, Over to Candleford (1941: based on the nearby market town of "Candleford"), and Candleford Green (1943). All were set in Oxfordshire and nearby Buckinghamshire. They are her celebrated account of Victorian agrarian life in the 1880s. The first part describes hard life in the hamlet she called Lark Rise.
