New York: Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, 1925. B&W stills. Early Photoplay Edition. Cloth. 8vo, red cloth with black lettering, illustrated with B&W glossy frontispiece and 9 full-page glossy stills from the RKO 1934 movie, archival mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket with color image of John Barrymore in the rigging plus his facsimile signature, 511 pages. Very Good / Good +. Item #4638
SCARCE Photoplay illustrated edition in the pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) but with a few losses (most notably a 1" chip by the "M" of Moby; also erosion at the head of the dj's spine and slightly at extremities).
The front endpapers have previous ownership & sale markings.
Melville's classic about obsession on the high seas in a desirable Photoplay edition.
The copyright date of 1925 doesn't accurately reflect the 1934 RKO film starring John Barrymore. Arnie Davis (see below) illustrates a different cover for the 1934 edition (illust. plates [p.48]). Given the facsimile signature of Barrymore on this colorful dj which suggests a design intended to capitalize on stardom and movie success, this appears to be an early variant--possibly printed shortly after the Davis' illustration of Barrymore/Ahab in a whaling ship on a "Nantucket sleigh-ride" cover.
See Arnie Davis, Photoplay Editions and other Movie Tie-In Books, p. of stamp-sized illustrations, and the 1934 sleighride dj illustrated & p.151.
