Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869 – 1935) was an American poet who won three Pulitzer Prizes for his work, and was nomin"ated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. AVON'S HARVEST is a long narrative poem--"a tragic novel in verse--which tells the story of how a man's life was destroyed by fear caused by an unreasoning hatred he formed as a youth.

We quote the opening stanza:

Fear, like a living fire that only death
Might one day cool, had now in Avon’s eyes
Been witness for so long of an invasion
That made of a gay friend whom we had known
Almost a memory, wore no other n
ame
As yet for us than fear.
