Robert M. Utley (b. 1920), former chief historian for the National Park Service, is the author of numerous books, including award-winning biographies of Custer, Sitting Bull, and Billy the Kid. His wife is Melody Webb, a Park Service veteran and distinguished historian. Utley details the workings of the National Park Service under six presidents through Jimmy Carter, as well as the development of the Western History Association. Given his expertise on Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Utley's discussion of that climactic and tragic episode is of special interest.
