Capote's last published novel which after his death in 1984 was found to be unfinished. The work was a thinly disguised roman a clef based on at least some still-living "characters." Upon the publication of three chapters in serial form by Esquire magazine in 1975 and 1976 ("Unspoiled Monsters," "Kate McCloud," and "La Cote Basque"), it was thought that the exposure caused by the thinly disguised narrative about bixexual P.B. Jones and his society friends led at least one female "character" to actually commit suicide, thus causing the author to shelve his work. With a useful Editor's Note by Joseph Fox.
