Originally published in London during 1932 by Ernest Benn. Deals with Cary's Nigerian experiences, a swift and violent novel about a community exposed to revolutionary ideas from the world beyond its borders. After a long and crippling drought, riots break out between Christians and pagans over the worth of their gods and the power of magic to bring rain. The novel deals also with other superstitions and witchcraft, as well as romance.

Joyce Cary (1888 - 1957) was an Irish novelist. Dissatisfied with his prospects in England, Cary joined the Nigerian political service and served with a Nigerian regiment fighting in the German Colonly of Cameroon during World War I. Wounded, after recovery, he served as a colonial officer in Borgu. His sensitivity to colonial benefits and detriments affecting the natives informs this novel. Cary wrote about " A creativity that destroys the old as it fashions the new, amidst the conservative desire to preserve things as they are."
