William F. Nolan (born 1928) is also the award-winning co-author with George Clayton Johnson of the Sci-Fi classic, Logan's Run (nominated for a Hugo & Nebula), and the definitive biography, Hammett: A Life at the Edge (1983). The Dashiell Hammett Casebook was originally published in 1969.
Nolan was voted a Living Legend in Dark Fantasy by the International Horror Guild in 2002. He also has the honorary title of Author Emeritus by the Sccience Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
