THE ENGLISH NOVEL IN THE TIME OF SHAKESPEARE; Revised and Enlarged by the Author

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1890. First American Edition. Decorated & gilt-stamped cloth. 8vo, blue cloth with gilt lettering & Elizabethan woman on spine, engraved frontispiece of Queen Elizabeth, translated from the French by Elizabeth Lee, illustrated, t.e.g., [434] pages. Very Good. Item #190

Very Useful study on less well known subjects relating to Shakespeare, early novels, and the Elizabethans. The volume deals with much more than novels and gives valuable insights into such authors as Lyly, Sidney, Nashe, and Dekker, as well as the influence of astrology on their work.

Mssr. Jusserand was a knowledgeable and perceptive scholar of English Renaissance literature, who became the French ambassador to the United States during the First World War.

Issued in the same year as the London: T. Fisher Unwin edition, this copy is neither Ex Library nor a reprint.

Internally the book is bright, tight, and the plates are unfoxed; externally, the cloth is slightly rubbed and the lower cap/headpiece is cut (3/8") & somewhat abraided. Dark ink signature on ffe barely visible against charcoal gray endpaper.

Early tissue-guarded illustrations include: Queen Elizabeth (frontispiece engraving); Robert, The Devil (c.1510), the Lamia (1607), Queen Cleopatra, etc.

Contents: 1) Before Shakespeare (Remote origin of the novel - Beowulf ... to Development of Printing & Medieval Romances set in type, in the 16th century ..., 2) Tudor - The Fashions And The Novel ..., 3) Lyly and his " Euphues " (a book for women) ..., 4) Lyly's Legatees ..., 5) Sir Philip Sidney And Pastoral Romance ..., 6) Thomas Nashe: The Picaresque And Realistic Novel ..., 7) After Shakespeare; Index.

Book weighs 2 1/4 pounds.
