Excellent anthology of poems by 92 early American female poets; among them Mrs. Anne Bradstreet, Mrs. Phillis Wheatley Peters, both Carey's, Miss Eliza Townsend, Lucy Larcom, Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale, Mrs. Julia Rush Ward, Mrs. Lydia Maria Child, Mrs. Julia Ward Howe, Mercy Warren, and Mrs. Maria Lowell.
The six engravings are derived from other artwork. They are entitled: "Edith," "A Portrait," "The Country Maid," "Harvey Birch," "Bianca," and "The Handmaid."
Griswold was also editor of The Poets and Poetry of America, The Prose Authors of America, & The Poets and Poetry of England.
Edgar Allan Poe reviewed the anthology and approved of author Griswold's taste and courage in promoting these often little known "lady-poets."
